From One Student to Company-Wide Impact: How New Heights English

As a language teacher, I never planned on starting a business. At New Heights English, my business didn’t start with a business plan or a marketing campaign—it started with one motivated student named Alex.

Alex worked on the production floor at a steel manufacturing facility in Georgia. He was skilled, reliable, and respected by his teammates, but like many talented workers, he faced a major barrier to advancement: English. Determined to improve, Alex began taking English classes with me and paid for them out of his own pocket. He showed up consistently, practiced outside of class, and made steady progress—but it wasn’t easy. The financial strain was real, and it became clear that access to language training shouldn’t depend on personal sacrifice alone.

Eventually, Alex approached his company’s HR team with a simple request: instead of paying individually, could the company sponsor group English classes for employees like him who wanted to grow? HR saw the value immediately—not just for Alex, but for safety, communication, and leadership development across the plant.

As conversations continued, HR also recognized another need. Many supervisors and managers struggled to communicate with Spanish-speaking employees. To truly improve communication on both sides, they asked if Spanish classes could be added as well.

That decision changed everything.

The company partnered with New Heights English to deliver workplace-focused English and Spanish classes, tailored specifically to a manufacturing environment. The program was practical, flexible, and directly tied to daily operations. The results were strong enough that my contract has now been renewed five times. For the Spanish classes, as word got around about how fun they were, the accountant and IT guys also joined in the fun as a great team-building opportunity. Live classes are offered both online and in-person.

For Alex, the impact has been life-changing.

In just one year of focused English instruction, Alex has earned two promotions. He now confidently leads team meetings on the manufacturing floor, including stepping in when his manager is unavailable to help translate during the daily team meetings. His growth didn’t come from grammar drills—it came from learning the language he needed to communicate clearly, give instructions, and lead with confidence and being in a supportive work environment.

Alex’s story reflects what we see again and again: when companies invest in language access, they unlock talent that was already there.

What began as one student paying out of pocket became the foundation for New Heights English—a company built on the belief that language training is not a perk, but a pathway to leadership, safety, and retention.
