In today’s manufacturing environment, many supervisors and HR professionals lead teams that include employees who are learning English as a second language (ESL). When language barriers aren’t addressed intentionally, they can impact safety, productivity, morale, and retention. The good news? With a few thoughtful strategies, managers can create a more effective and inclusive workplace for everyone.
1. Prioritize clear, simple communication
Avoid idioms, slang, and overly complex explanations when giving instructions. Short sentences, consistent vocabulary, and visual aids go a long way. When possible, demonstrate tasks rather than relying on verbal explanations alone. This helps ESL learners build confidence while ensuring critical information is understood correctly.
2. Check for understanding—without pressure
Instead of asking “Do you understand?” try asking employees to repeat instructions back in their own words or show you the task. This removes embarrassment and gives supervisors a clearer picture of comprehension, especially when safety is involved.
3. Encourage a supportive team culture
Employees learn language faster when they feel safe making mistakes. Encourage patience and respect among team members, and model that behavior as a leader. Small gestures—like allowing extra processing time or clarifying without frustration—make a big difference in trust and engagement.
4. Be consistent with terminology
In manufacturing, consistency is key. Use the same words for tools, processes, and safety procedures every time. This helps ESL learners connect vocabulary to real tasks and reduces confusion on the floor.
5. Invest in workplace language training
On-the-job exposure helps, but structured language training accelerates progress dramatically. Targeted ESL or Spanish classes focused on manufacturing vocabulary, safety language, and supervisor communication can improve productivity while reducing costly errors and turnover.
